AfghanAnt’s Thoughts on the Uncanny X-Force

Uncanny X-Force #1

Uncanny X-Force #1

I have never been a fan of X-Force. I’ve enjoyed the art but I always thought it was ultra-violent for the sake of being ultra-violent. I also never understood why Cyclops, of all people, would assemble a team of killers to defend the mutant race. It just always seemed against the X-Men code. Anyway, I’m excited to see Psylocke and Archangel on the same team again. Hopefully we’ll see some romantic connection amongst the murdering.

We all knew Wolverine was going to stay on the team. He’s practically the leader but I’m confused why two non-mutants are on the team. Fantomex is a super-sentinel and Deadpool is a mutate.

In fact, Psylocke shouldn’t be considered a mutant (well I guess he Asian body is actually a mutant) but originally Betsy Braddock was half-human, half-Otherworlder like her brothers Brian Braddock (Captain Britain) and Jamie Braddock.

If you know anything about me, you know I loved Morrison’s X-Men run, so seeing Fantomex back is really excited but I’m not digging this weird black and white costume he’s wearing and I’m really not digging Deadpool’s either. Let’s hope they aren’t colored like this in the actual comic.

UNCANNY X-MEN #526 (MAY100634)
Rated T+ …$3.99
FOC – 7/8/10, On Sale 7/28/10

So it appears that there will be at least five new mutants coming to the X-Universe this month. I’m excited but at the same time I feel like I’ve seen all of these characters before (Blink is that you?). I’m guessing Hope’s power recently awakening is going to restart the mutant gene.

If only Wanda had said no more Jean Grey clones and two of my favorite characters would have survived Second Coming…RIP Nightcrawler and Cable.

Marvel Comics: Cloak and Dagger One-Shot #1

Cloak and Dagger #1

Marvel Comics: Cloak and Dagger One Shot

Marvel Comics: Cloak and Dagger One Shot

WRITER: Stuart Moore
ARTIST: Mark Brooks
THE STORY: Marvel’s most-requested duo return in this all-new one-shot, spinning out of X-MEN: NATION X! Cloak — dark, brooding teleporter. Dagger — deadly, shining mistress of light. Having quit the Dark X-Men, Cloak and Dagger find their partnership strained as they struggle to fit in among the mutants of Utopia. But when a new menace targets Cloak, Dagger must make a fateful choice for both of them. Guest-starring the X-Men, and written by Stuart Moore (WOLVERINE NOIR) with stunning art by Mark Brooks (YOUNG AVENGERS).

AfghanAnt’s Thoughts:

I love Cloak and Dagger. I think they are one of those most defining superheroes duo of 1980’s and unfortunately they almost ended with cancellation.  I hope that this one-shot answer all the questions regarding the origins of the powers and their relationship. For such a long time, I felt like Ty needed Tandy so much but she didn’t really need him. She just felt like it was her job to curb his hunger (which oddly plays almost no role in his powers anymore. I liked angsty Cloak).

Anyway, here are a few pages from the Cloak and Dagger one-shot on sale March 31, 2010.

Marvel Comics: Ultimate X

Ultimate X - Sabretooth

Ultimate X - Sabretooth

Following the devastating effects of Ultimatum, the Ultimate Universe has become a much more volatile place. Beginning this spring, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Arthur Adams explore this brave new world in ULTIMATE X.

While Loeb couldn’t disclose what characters fans will see in the new series, he did offer up some hints as to what those protagonists have to contend with.

Ultimate X - The Lineup

“I can’t get into specifics without giving up too much at this point,” warns Loeb. “Let’s just say that this is a difficult time in the Ultimate Universe in the aftermath of Ultimatum, and there’s a great deal of healing that needs to be done. Mutants are all but obliterated. Captain America is a fugitive. The Fantastic Four have gone their own way. But that doesn’t mean that evil doesn’t still exist and in many ways can use this opportunity to take advantage of a broken world. ULTIMATE X will address these [issues].”
While the title may conjure images of the Ultimate Universe’s Merry Mutants, Loeb reveals that there’s more to the series than just that.

“Yes, it’s something bigger than that,” the writer relates. “This book isn’t just about mutants, super heroes, or anything you’re expecting. This is about life and the hard choices we make for the greater good.”

Given the dark events that have hit our heroes this past year, Loeb also states that ULTIMATE X will provide them with something they haven’t had in a while.

“Despite all that has happened, there is hope,” he professes. “That’s the message of the series.”

For ULTIMATE X, Loeb has the legendary Arthur Adams bringing his scripts to life and couldn’t be more pleased.

“Arthur Adams is the perfect choice for anything,” exudes Loeb. “These are stories that are both big and small and Arthur handles it beautifully. We’re all tremendously excited to have him back doing a monthly title!”

Ultimate Comics: X #2

Ultimate X #2

According to Loeb, the series will represent a return to form for him in many ways:

“These are very personal stories. People who’ve read the scripts are surprised how different they are from my other work in the Ultimate Universe. My hope is the readers enjoy it as much as I have been.”

AfghanAnt’s Thoughts:

I hate Jeph Loeb. I mean I really, really hate him. Especially for what he’s done to the Ultimates in volume 3. While, I’ve always thought he work on DC Comics was good (he does better when reality is rebooted every 5 to 10 years), Marvel and the Ultimate universes are so solid in their foundation. Marvel has always been very linear in their story telling and very history and Loeb has a bad habit of overwriting or even ignoring what other people are doing. However, Ultimate X is good…even great. It allows Loeb to writing whatever insanity he wants and it has to be honored because it’s his sandbox. I’m especially loving that this comic feels like what other second generation X-comics should have been. Even though it takes place in the Ultimate universe it feels like a world where the X-Men have perished and their children start to inherit the Earth.  Plus Arthur Adams’ artwork is just stunning.

UNCANNY X-MEN #522 – Kitty Pryde Returns

Kitty Pryde Comes Home in Uncanny X-Men 522

Kitty Pryde Comes Home in Uncanny X-Men 522

I’m wondering if Kitty return is going to have anything to do with Lockheed, Agent Brand, and Beast in S.W.O.R.D. It makes sense because those three characters were involved in her Lost in Space reenactment.  I guess I am more concerned about how Kitty will fit into the X-Universe when Colossus is pretty much a background character and her title as the X-Tween has been officially given to Pixie.

Fraction better not fuck this one up like he did with Psylocke – worst comic book return ever.

Strange Tales #3 – Longshot and the X-Men

Longshot and the X-Men feat. in Strange Tales

Marvel Comics Longshot

Longshot story that features, among other things, our mulleted hero riding an energy skateboard, and a metal-singing Storm accompanied by Wolverine and Gambit on bass and guitar.

AfghanAnt’s Opinion – This is what should have been done with Longshot a long time ago. While I really enjoy Longshot‘s appearance in Peter David’s X-Factor, I can’t help but feel like he’s not really Longshot – like he’s just this guy who looks like Longshot in a terribly edited version of his costume (ala cosplayer). The great thing about Longshot is he was unjaded and fun and from the looks of these pages I can only assume we will see those fundamental elements of the character explored.

X-Men: The Second Coming

X-Men: The Second Coming

I really liked the X-Men: Messiah Complex when it started but some how during Cable titles and the Messiah War crossover it lost me – completely. However the cover of X-Men: The Second Coming seems sort of cool. Maybe it is David Finch art or maybe it’s Hope looking a lot like a mini-Phoenix but I really want to know where this story will end and what will happen with Cable and Hope.

Cloak and Dagger are Officially X-Men

X-Men VS AgentofAtlas - Pewiew

X-Men VS Agent of Atlas - Preview

Looks like Cloak and Dagger’s mutant misadventures will be continuing as they are seen in the X-Men Vs Agents of Atlas Preview. I’m ambivalent to their inclusion into a roster that is already fudge pack’d. Not only do you have the core X-Men such as Colossus, Dazzler, and Angel just standing around, but now you’ve got Namor, the New Mutants, the New X-Men, Young X-Men (I wish Ink would laser remove himself), The X-Club (Fraction trying to be Ellis, AMIRITE?), useless mutants (Bling!, what’s his face, and the ugly one) sitting in the background but now you’ve got Cloak and Dagger there too.

I didn’t have a problem with them being Dark X-Men because I knew it was going to spin-off into its own title. A separate title that featured a smaller cast means Cloak and Dagger had a chance to do something or at least be angst and interracial. But with them being lumped into with a cast of over 50 and only two titles they will essentially just be transportation (as seen above) or the very least background (haithar every B-list character in Uncanny X-Men) because lets face it Ellis has the toys he wants to play with in their own Astonishing sandbox and to an extent so does Yost/Kyle with X-Force.

We need another ethnic cleansing!

I miss the good ol’ x-title days where every one was on a team and that team stayed in its own title – this way of separating the the large cast in the 90’s really worked and allowed for characters to grow and develop. I fear Cloak and Dagger being X-Men means Cloak and Dagger being in limbo. Looks at the diverse and beloved cast of the New X-Men – they’ve been split up into sell-able (X-23, Pixie, The Cuckoos  Elixir, and too a much smaller extent Surge) and page fillers. While Wolverine and Emma Frost pull triple duty in every Marvel title ever! I am so tired of Emma Frost being sneaky and doing things for the greater good and I am just fucking tired of seeing Wolverine cut things and being grumpy – doesn’t he do anything else at all?
