Ultimate Comics X – Firestar?

Ultimate Firestar

Ultimate Firestar - Liz Allan

If you’ve been following my blog I’ve got a comic crush on Loeb’s newest Ultimate work – Ultimate Comic X. Even though I had initially believed all the characters were new mutants, it seems I was mistaken.

First “Karen” is revealed to be none other than Ultimate Jean Grey and just recently I realized that the fiery girl at the bottom of the first issue has to be Ultimate Firestar, Liz Allan.

Ultimate Firestar - Ultimate Comics X

We know that in the Ultimate X-Men/Fantastic Four Annual, Liz Allan aka Firestar (why isn’t her name Angelica?) is revealed to be the “Human Torch member” of the future Fantastic Four team. So she had to survive the Magneto mayhem and last time we saw her she was hanging with the X-Men and she was the only one that was slaughtered, moved over to Ultimate Spidey (like Kitty and Bobby) or pushed off in a corner (see Rogue and Storm).

The only thing about Ultimate Firestar I didn’t like was why did they decide for her father to be Blob? Was it to say unlike mutancy in 616, Ultimate mutancy is actually random (with the except of Wolverin Jr/Ultimate Daken/James Hudson)?

I also wonder how Loeb will use the fact that this is a mutant who doesn’t want to be a mutant and in fact hates them? This whole title will continue to be interesting if he keeps the senseless battles to a minimum and focus on who these characters are and why they exist in the Ultimate world.

Ultimate Comics X #2 – Who is Karen Grant?

Ultimate Comics: Ultimate X "Karen"

Ultimate Comics X "Karen Grant"

Who is Ultimate X “Karen Grant”?

I originally thought this black haired beauty was Ultimate universe’s Wicked but after reading the recently released previews (full of red herrings), I’m pretty sure it’s Ultimate Jean Grey. Green eyes, Cyke’s visor, dying her hair (which by the way looks better) it’s gotta be Jeanie.

I like Ultimate Jean Grey alright  but she never really jumped out at me. It always felt like they gave her a haircut and rehashed everything from 616. There was nothing new or really excited about her that I couldn’t already get in classic X-Men comics. In fact, when all the Ultimate X-Men were being killed off, I wished Jean Grey would’ve died instead of punk rock Dazzler or crazy Gambit-eyed Psylocke. However, after reading the first four pages of Ultimate Comics X #2, I have to say I’m impressed yet again by Loeb.

Oh Ultimate Cyke! I'm so glad you're dead.

Oh Ultimate Cyke never come back. EVER!

I KNOW! He’s evil and a terrible Marvel comic writer and ignores history, personality, and powers so he write them like DC Comic characters but he’s doing really good work in Ultimate Comics X. It’s like he heard all the bitching and decided he’d actually try and write something worth reading for Marvel.

My only concerns with Ultimate Jean Grey is another Dark Phoenix storyline or something equally dumb that only Loeb could dream up.

I don’t even know Ultimate Comic X’s Karen but I like her better 616 Jean Grey. I like her a lot and I actually want her to do something other than be Cyke’s girlfriend, Wolverine’s naughty girl, or planet-destroying Phoenix. I mean who is Jean Grey when she’d not all those things? The 90’s era Jean Grey who was dull as a door nail and her only development was getting married? Or 00’s era Jean Grey who got all White Phoenixy after allowing her husband to continue his affair? Or is she just that red-head telepath/telekine who is potentially the most powerful out of the original five?

I mean who the fuck is Jean Grey?

I certainly never known and I think this is an opportunity for Marvel to flesh her out even if it’s only the Ultimate version.

Jean Grey, like many other female character, seems to be defined by her powers (see Rogue) or the men in her life (see Invisible Woman). I see Loeb taking both Scott and Logan away from her allows her the chance to shine and be a character who can stand on her own. Ultimately (pun not intended) it would be nice to know what she likes (besides mythological birds and hairy Canadians).  Is that too much to ask for?

Wicked Sweet

I swear this looks like Wicked's powers.

Ultimate X - Sabretooth

Following the devastating effects of Ultimatum, the Ultimate Universe has become a much more volatile place. Beginning this spring, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Arthur Adams explore this brave new world in ULTIMATE X.

While Loeb couldn’t disclose what characters fans will see in the new series, he did offer up some hints as to what those protagonists have to contend with.

Ultimate X - The Lineup

“I can’t get into specifics without giving up too much at this point,” warns Loeb. “Let’s just say that this is a difficult time in the Ultimate Universe in the aftermath of Ultimatum, and there’s a great deal of healing that needs to be done. Mutants are all but obliterated. Captain America is a fugitive. The Fantastic Four have gone their own way. But that doesn’t mean that evil doesn’t still exist and in many ways can use this opportunity to take advantage of a broken world. ULTIMATE X will address these [issues].”
While the title may conjure images of the Ultimate Universe’s Merry Mutants, Loeb reveals that there’s more to the series than just that.

“Yes, it’s something bigger than that,” the writer relates. “This book isn’t just about mutants, super heroes, or anything you’re expecting. This is about life and the hard choices we make for the greater good.”

Given the dark events that have hit our heroes this past year, Loeb also states that ULTIMATE X will provide them with something they haven’t had in a while.

“Despite all that has happened, there is hope,” he professes. “That’s the message of the series.”

For ULTIMATE X, Loeb has the legendary Arthur Adams bringing his scripts to life and couldn’t be more pleased.

“Arthur Adams is the perfect choice for anything,” exudes Loeb. “These are stories that are both big and small and Arthur handles it beautifully. We’re all tremendously excited to have him back doing a monthly title!”

Ultimate X #2

According to Loeb, the series will represent a return to form for him in many ways:

“These are very personal stories. People who’ve read the scripts are surprised how different they are from my other work in the Ultimate Universe. My hope is the readers enjoy it as much as I have been.”

AfghanAnt’s Thoughts:

I hate Jeph Loeb. I mean I really, really hate him. Especially for what he’s done to the Ultimates in volume 3. While, I’ve always thought he work on DC Comics was good (he does better when reality is rebooted every 5 to 10 years), Marvel and the Ultimate universes are so solid in their foundation. Marvel has always been very linear in their story telling and very history and Loeb has a bad habit of overwriting or even ignoring what other people are doing. However, Ultimate X is good…even great. It allows Loeb to writing whatever insanity he wants and it has to be honored because it’s his sandbox. I’m especially loving that this comic feels like what other second generation X-comics should have been. Even though it takes place in the Ultimate universe it feels like a world where the X-Men have perished and their children start to inherit the Earth.  Plus Arthur Adams’ artwork is just stunning.

The New Ultimates: Marvel Comics

New Marvel Comics Title: The New Ultimates

Details on Jeff Loeb’s and Frank Cho’s The New Ultimates:

“New Ultimates are now the ONLY superhero team left in the Ultimate Universe. There are no X-Men. The Fantastic Four have disbanded. Even Mark’s Ultimate Avengers aren’t really a group per se as much as a team that’s been assembled for a top secret cover ops mission.”
