Batman: Under the Red Hood

Batman: Under the Red Hood

I am a huge fan of the DC Comics movies – while Marvel’s animated features suffer from bad acting and bad animation, Warner Bros. has always been smart enough to enlist the best for the cartoons. Batman: Under the Red Hood is no exception. The animation is tight, the script is well thought out, and best of all Bruce Timm is producing it.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the film:

Loosely based on the Batman story arc “Under the Hood”, the story follows Batman and Dick Grayson – the original Boy Wonder now hero Nightwing – finding themselves being stalked by a mysterious yet familiar figure known as the vigilante Red Hood, who tries to rid Gotham City’s crimes without following the same ethics as its heroes and apparently knows all of their secrets. As the Dark Knight tries to unravel the true identity of his stalker, he must also battle three of his enemies: the Joker, the criminally insane Clown Prince of Crime who first wore the Red Hood cowl and was responsible for the murder of Batman’s second protégé Jason Todd; Ra’s al Ghul, the immortal international terrorist who is somehow connected to the Red Hood; and Black Mask, the notorious kingpin who is launching a campaign to take over all of Gotham City’s criminal underworld. When the Joker becomes involved in the conflict between Batman and the Red Hood, hard truths are revealed and old wounds reopened.

Batman Porn Parody – A Review

Batman XXX - A Porn Parody

What can I say about Batman XXX that hasn’t been tweets, gossiped, or blogged about already – I’m not sure but I’m going to tell you what I thought of it.

Let me start by saying the acting was superb and I really mean that. There were times when I forgot I was watching an adult film and thought I was watching a rerun of the old Adam West Batman show. Everyone’s acting work was impressive but Dale Debone not only looks but sounds the part of West’s Batman. I was in awe every time he was on screen. If I had to say anyone was weak in their character, I would have to say it was “cute as a button and still refusing to do anal” Lexi Belle. One could argue that Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl was a little bland and forgettable but Lexi’s is even worse. Like many of her sex scene she left bored and wondering when James and Dale would return to the scene. Oh speaking of James, he nailed Burt Ward – not literally – yet kept his dirty Jewish boy porn persona intact. Besides Dale Debone’s Batman scene, James Deen’s sex scene were the most interesting thing – and not because he has a 9 inch cock either. He was into the character of Robin and into the sex which makes for a great porn parody. Two thumbs up, Mr. Deen. Honorable mention goes to Tori Black, Evan Stone, and Randy West for looking the parts if not completely capture the essence of the characters.

While the movie’s storyline felt authentic to the original Batman show, the sex left something to the imagination (which is saying A LOT). I felt like too much emphasis was put on the story (wait was there a real storyline?) and not enough direction on the sex. While this movie wasn’t jerk off encouragement, it was fun and I would recommend it for fanboys for the lulz.

I wonder if Axel Braun has a Superman porn parody in the works…

2010 Comic Character to Watch: Mark Millar’s Nemesis

What If Bruce Wayne was the Joker? Nemesis?

Mark Miller's Nemesis

Mark Millar's Nemesis

Dubbed the “What If Bruce Wayne Was the Joker” story, Mark Millar’s Nemeis is a Marvel’s imprint Icon Comics original. While many people are complaining at this is incredibly unoriginal and were down right shocked that this wasn’t a DC Elsewhere title – I’m optimistic that Millar (who wrote the Ultimates, The Authority, and Civil War) will pull off something amazing and unique with this title.  I expect this to be as much of a Batman rip-off as Marvelman is a Captain Marvel (Shazam) rip-off. – a well known story retold in an extremely modern way.

Millar’s Take on Icon Comics Nemesis:

Yeah, a lot of people who’ve read it have been coming up with hilarious tag-lines. “What if Batman was The Joker?” is the tame one. “What if Batman was a total cunt?” is maybe my favourite, although it’s hardly going to be an ad. [It’s] is a reversal of the Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark archetype. What if this genius billionaire was just this total shit, and the only thing that stood between him and a city was the cops? It’s Batman versus Commissioner Gordon, in a weird way. Or maybe a super-villain version of “Se7en.” A billionaire anarchist up against ordinary people. The Joker’s the best thing in the Batman movies, so this guy is a bit of an amalgamation of all the stuff we like.

I honestly don’t know what to think about these. I’ve seen all of the others but these really bother me for some reason. Why does DC Direct allow these to be designed, created and sold? Batman looks like a Devilman character and Robin is obviously Card Captor Sakura cosplaying.  I’m actually really scared/excited to see the Superman one. We’ve seen Supergirl and well she looked like Supergirl. Same goes for Powergirl, Batgirl, Huntress and especially Poison Ivy.  I really wish Superman isn’t just some beautiful shounen in over designed spandex.

Justice League of Japan

I’m sort of disappointed with the Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance previews and here’s why: it doesn’t look good. While the concept itself is solid (who doesn’t think Japan would totally start their own superhero team based on the Justice League), I think the designs are blah, the names are overly Japanese (but not in a good way), and honestly I feel like I’ve seen Marvel do this twice already. It is like DC thought they were being trendy and forward-thinking with this team of Japanese idols but it is about 10 years too late. Japanese culture and cartoon still has a huge fanbase in America but nowhere near what is was 10 years ago.

What makes me even more upset is I think DC missed there chance to cashing in on the trend 10 years ago when Cliff Chiang presented his Japanese inspired Justice League to them.  But instead of using a golden idea, they went with that terrible Justice League of Mechas idea. DC, I ask you, why would Superman of all people need a giant robot if his powers were still active? Is he not strong and invulnerable enough to fight bad guys on his own? Does  he really need to get inside of a 50 foot mecha and battle along side the six other Justice Leaguers?

Back to Chiang’s design – they are fun, reminiscent of mainstream Anime characters enough to make them available to a large demographic, and it could have been set in an alternate Earth (Elseworlds).

Casting Batman and Robin as a science ninja gatchamans is just a wonderfully brilliant idea. Also recasting the Joker and Harley as a J-pop idol is sort of interesting. It would totally reverse their roles in the publics eyes. Batman would be seen as a hero by the government and the Joker would be incredibly loved (feared) by the public like the murderous cannibal turned food critic, Issei Sagawa.  And having the man of steel be a giant Mazinger-Z mecha with as a powerless Clark Kent as a nutty professor (WOOT!) is so much fun I can not even explain it. I said I was going to at least try my hand at Batman and Superman but I want to make them all for Freedom Force now.
