“In the ramp up to any superhero movie, the unveiling of the hero in costume is a pretty make or break moment for longtime fans. Today, interested parties get their first crack at checking out the lead from Marvel Studios May 6, 2011 “Thor” adaptation as Yahoo! Movies has the first shot of actor Chris Hemsworth in the regalia of the famed Thundergod. CBR is pleased to share a peek at the image from the Kenneth Branagh-directed action epic below.
For a full look at the publicity shot, head to Yahoo! Movies, and be sure to sound off on the CBR Forums about how well Hemsworth wears the mantle of Thor.

Destroyer from the Thor Movie

Destroyer Movie Costume

“Latino Review’s source says:

THE DESTROYER is sent to earth by Loki to destroy Thor. It stands at about 9 FEET TALL.

For those you aren’t sure what the Destroyer(via Wiki), The character first appears in Journey into Mystery #118 (Jul. 1965) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The Destroyer is an enchanted suit of armor forged by Odin, and when it first appeared it was hinted that the Destroyer had been created as a weapon to face some dark menace from the stars. The Destroyer is used by Thor’s arch-foe Loki on several occasions, and each time has actually come close to killing Thor.”

My Thoughts:

I like the futuristic Jack Kirby feel of the Coipel design costume. It seems that Matt Fraction’s Asgardian super-science run will be a sort of tie-in to the movie. I don’t mind this but I don’t want 50 years of Thor history to be thrown at the window because rainbow bridges and goat pulled chariots would be lame. As for Chris Hemsworth (who was previously seen as Captain Kirk’s father in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek), I’m not convinced he was the right choice for Thor. I think True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård would have been a much better choice for Thor. He has shown that he can play a thousand year old viking vampire so why not a thousand year old viking thunder god?

True Blood: Eric Northman the Viking

Plus he looks more like Thor in this shot from True Blood than Hemsworth looks in Thor’s costume.

As for the Destroyer, I like it. Shiny.

Despite the Super-friends cast (I’m looking at you random Black and Asian “Asgardian” Gods), I’m looking forward to Thor being released on May 6, 2011.

  1. i’m glad Alexander Skarsgård didn’t get thor, mainly cause there is a chance he can be cast as he-man ha

  2. My friends and I thought the same of Skarsgard when we first saw him on True Blood wearing a black tee and standing like he was ready to pounce. I hope they keep the mystic angle of the Norse mythos. I like chariots pulled by goats. but these pics give me what some call “hope”.
