Nintendo Power Fail – Final Fantasy IV Artwork

Back in the early 90’s Nintendo Power was the ultimate gamer magazine. It would detail secrets, give you walkthroughs, and even have a cheat codes. However it would also do terrible Americanized drawings of game characters. One of their worst was the Final Fantasy IV (II to original American gamers). Here are those drawing:

  1. No Match for Amano but they’re not THAT bad.
    The Cover, Rydia, Bard and Tella actually look nice.
    Even though they don’t look like their actual counterparts.

    The Zelda illustrations from NP were pretty good btw.

  2. Honestly, I think these are really good. They look like something out of a Moebius comic. Very imaginative and original.

  3. As old as this post is, someone’s gotta step in with the facts. These are not “Americanized”, they’re by the famous Japanese artist Katsuya Terada.

    In addition to illustrating many Japanese strategy guides, he did concept art and illustrations in an official capacity for Zelda II, Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Virtua Fighter Remix, Tekken Tag, Tekken 5, Cutie Honey and Blood: The Last Vampire.

    Few will say that these FF4 pieces are his best work, but he’s not some random gaijin scribbling normie versions of Japanese characters for uncultured yanks.
